The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which won’t come out for almost two years, might have a cool new camera feature. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, who knows a lot about Apple’s plans, these phones could have a camera that lets you change how much light gets in.
Right now, the latest iPhones like the iPhone 14 Pro, 15 Pro, and 16 Pro have a camera with a fixed setting for light entry. But the iPhone 18 Pro models might let you adjust this, which is something you find on big, professional cameras from Sony or Canon.
This feature, called variable aperture, would give you more control over how much of the background in your photos looks blurry. It’s like when you take a picture of someone, and you want the background to be less focused to make the person stand out more.
The parts for this feature will come from a company in the Netherlands named BE Semiconductor.
However, since phones have small cameras, it’s not clear how much better this will make your photos. Also, if Apple decides to make the camera sensor bigger, that would help even more with making the background blur effect look good naturally, rather than using software tricks as they do now with Portrait mode.
Initially, there was talk about this feature coming to an iPhone 17 model, but now it seems like it’s the iPhone 18 Pro models that will get it. These phones are expected to be out in September 2026.
