Chrome on Android May Adopt iOS-Like Animations for Gestures

Chrome Android iOS Animations

Chrome app could soon bring iOS-like rich animations to Android devices. Google is testing new appealing visual animations for the Chrome app for back and forward gestures.

The latest Chrome Canary comes with hidden flags that unlock the iOS-inspired back-and-forward gesture control animations for the Android version of Google’s browser app.

Here’s how the iOS-inspired back-and-forward gesture animation works in Chrome on Android:

New Animation: Google is testing a smooth, iOS-like animation for back-and-forward gestures in Chrome.

Flags Needed: The “back-forward visual transitions” flag enables the animation for smoother navigation.

“Increments LocalSurfaceId for the main-frame same-doc navigations” flag enhances the animation for smoother transitions within the same website.

Back/Forward Cache: Chrome uses a feature called Back/Forward Cache (bfcache) to store snapshots of pages, making them load faster when you go back or forward.

Smooth Transitions: The animations make browsing more fluid, similar to iOS devices, which are known for their smoothness and appealing animations.

Test Feature: This animation feature is currently in tested on Chrome Canary, and it’s not yet available to the public.

The feature is in development for an indefinite release timeline. Google may require more time to test the visual change for Chrome’s Android iteration before kicking off public rollout.
